I recently got into a debate about the best location to host a blog. Like any good debate, opinions were divided and varied. One thing was agreed upon by all: that any blog is better than none.

People blog for different reasons. Some simply want to express their thoughts and put pen to paper while others instead do it to promote themselves, or to promote products and services.
For a non-promotional blog, where the core objective is to record your views and ideas, I recommend a blogging network such as blogspot or wordpress. Generally, blog posts stand as much chance being found on a dedicated blogging site as they do under a dedicated domain.
Promoting services and products through blogging has been common practice for many years. There must literally be hundreds of millions of such pages all over the internet. If you plan on hosting a single blog to post reviews, discuss industry topics, or to simply communicate why your products and services are better, then I recommend setting up a blog that is integral to your website.
An integral blog will help drive traffic to your site where you then have the opportunity to promote specific products and services directly within the blog article.
If, on the other hand, you are blogging to promote a product or service at a specific url, then I recommend publishing variations of your blog article on as many external domains as possible. These external domains should including blogging sites such as blogspot and wordpress. You can also target article sites that relate to your industry. Links from related sites are worth a log more that links from non-related sites.
